The Santana Winds
You know the Santa Ana’s - those delightfully warm yet nasty winds that come around this time of year in Southern California, wreaking havoc left and right. Well, I heard a while ago that they’re not actually from Santa Ana.
Since I’m home for Thanksgiving in Orange County and there is talk of their return, I decided to get to the bottom of this name game.
It’s true! The Santa Ana winds are not even from Santa Ana. In fact, no one really knows the REAL reason for their name. History has it that the winds were once called the Santana winds, or Devil Winds, referring to their heat. The Los Angeles almanac tells of an Associated Press correspondent who in 1901 mistakenly referred to the Santana winds as the Santa Ana winds. Silly guy.
SO where do these winds come from? Nevada & Utah! From the high plateau regions between the Sierra Mountains and the Rockie
