San Francisco Bans Happy Meal
An ordinance was just passed in San Francisco that requires meals to meet certain nutritional guidelines if restaurants want to include a toy with purchase.
On a similar note, Yale researchers just released a report on fast food nutrition and marketing. Some interesting findings were
- only 12 of 3,039 kids’ meal combinations meet the researchers’ nutrition criteria for preschoolers
- 40% of children ages 2-11 ask their parents to go to McDonald’s at least once a week, 15% of preschoolers ask to go every day
- 84% of parents report taking their kid age 2-11 to a fast food restaurant at least once in the past week
- preschoolers see 3 fast food ads per day, children 6-11 see about 3.5, and teens 12-27 see 5 fast food ads per day
